Ingredients
4 chicken eggs or 1 goose egg and 1 chicken egg
1 1/2 cups milk or oat milk
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon cardamom
1 loaf sourdough bread or gluten free sourdough bread, cubed
3 pears, peeled and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons butter or dairy free butter, cut in small chunks
turbinado or sanding sugar
vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving
Instructions
Coat 9-inch square pan with butter or no-stick spray.
In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom.
Add bread and ⅔ of the pears to prepared pan. Pour the milk mixture over bread. Top with the remaining sliced pears, the chunks of butter, and sprinkle liberally with turbinado or sanding sugar.
Chill 4 hours or overnight. This allows the bread to absorb all the liquid.
Heat oven to 375º F.
Bake 60 minutes or until golden brown and a knife comes out clean. Serve with your favorite ice cream!
