Chick Care

Croissant, Salmon Faverolles Chick – Do you see the Faverolles 5th toe showing?

Getting chicks, whether its your first time or your 25th time, is always fun and exciting. And we have plenty of resources to help ensure that your chick days run smoothly! Below, you’ll find links to all of our podcast episodes and articles about caring for your new babies.

Keeping chicks isn’t hard, but being prepared is a must. In the first few months of their lives, chicks need 5 things:

  • warmth
  • water
  • good food/nutrition
  • companionship
  • safety (usually provided by a secure brooder or with a hen in a broody coop)

Once you meet all of their needs, it’s extremely rewarding to watch them grow into beautiful adult chickens.  Chick care does change as your babies grow, but those five basic needs remain in some form the whole time.

If you’re completely new to chick care, or if you just want a refresher, our Chicks 101 and Quick Guide to Chick Care podcast episodes are a great place to start. We cover everything from types of brooders and bedding to brooder heat temperatures and feeding. We also explain in detail how USPS ships chicks through the mail. Occasionally, you’ll receive a chick in the mail that has been stressed and needs some TLC. We’ve written an article, Guide to Helping Shipping Stressed Chicks, that shares our simple but very effective methods to get chicks feeling better fast.
