This Bavarian Apple Torte is delicious and very easy to make. It’s three layers; a shortbread crust, a thin cheesecake layer, and a spiced apple layer. You only need one egg unless you decide to double the cheesecake layer – then you’ll need two eggs. As always, we include gluten and dairy free substitutions.
We talk you through making this recipe on Episode 221 of our podcast. If you enjoy this torte you may also like our recipes for Apple Marzipan Mini Cakes and Strawberry Cheesecake.
Bavarian Apple Torte
Ingredients
Crust:
½ cup butter or dairy free butter
⅓ cup granulated sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour or gluten free 1-1 flour
Cheese Mixture:
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese or dairy free cream cheese
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 egg
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Apple Mixture:
6 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
⅓ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ cup sliced almonds (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
Cream together butter and 1/3 cup sugar. Beat in the vanilla and flour. Dump crust mixture into the flat bottom of a 9-inch springform pan and pat crust across the bottom and slightly up the sides. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, blend cream cheese and 1/4 cup sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla. Pour cheese mixture over crust.
Combine 1/3 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Toss sliced apples with sugar mixture and spread over cheese filling.
Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and continue baking for 25 minutes. Sprinkle almonds over top of torte. Continue baking until almonds are lightly browned and apples are tender, around another 10 minutes. Cool completely before removing from pan. We find that this torte slices best after a night in the fridge.
